Merge Labs is developing an ultrasound-based brain-computer interface aimed at achieving high-bandwidth neural recording without surgical implantation. Co-founded by Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO) and Alex Blania (Worldcoin co-founder), the company raised the largest seed round in BCI history ($252M) led by OpenAI. Merge's approach uses focused ultrasound to achieve spatial resolution comparable to intracortical arrays while remaining entirely non-invasive. The company is in early R&D with a timeline to human trials not yet disclosed.
