Forest 1 is a research-grade ultrasound scanner smaller than a standard key fob, powered by Butterfly technology. When placed under the skull (or at a skull defect), it generates 3D maps of brain activity by detecting minute changes in blood flow with spatial resolution approximately 100x that of a typical MRI scan. Capable of both monitoring and modulating brain activity using ultrasound. ARIA has described it as 'the most advanced BCI in the world' for its unique ability to change activity across multiple brain regions simultaneously. The UK trial at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust focuses on patients with craniectomies and those undergoing awake craniotomy.
